Ox and Ass

Fred Sanders at The Scriptorium has an interesting story of why the ox and ass feature so prominently in nativity scenes and Christmas carols. The many layers are a fascinating example of how the meaning of the Biblical text grows richer over centuries of interpretation.

    I expect it is synchronicity – it is a metaphor that could be called on independently. The Job passage is more elaborated – 4 verses for each animal – true to the convincing ‘arguments’ from the created order.
